Meetings and Conferences

The FBA arranges a variety of national, regional and international meetings (by itself or jointly with others).

Each year we hold a highly respected Annual Scientific Meeting where members and delegates can come along and present their work and find out about the latest advances in freshwater science. This year we are supporting the work of the Regional Freshwater Groups in the UK and our Annual General Meeting will be held during the autumn meeting of the North East and Yorkshiure Freshwater Group, in Leeds on 22nd September.

We hold occasional joint meetings with the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM). The inaugural such meeting (on 16-17 September 2009) was entitled 'The Future of Freshwaters' and aimed to identify and address the needs of the UK water industry to meet the requirements of legislation such as the Water Framework Directive; more details about this meeting and its outcomes, click here.

In September 2008 we launched a series of Conferences in Aquatic Biology, the first of which investigated "Multiple Stressors in Freshwater Ecosystems". The second meeting, on "Integrated Catchment Management",  was held during April 2010.

There are a number of regional meetings organised by local freshwater groups around the UK . For further information, click here.

In an international context the FBA joins with other leading overseas associations to organise key events and meetings such as the Symposium for European Freshwater Sciences (SEFS) series of conferences. SEFS 5 - the Fifth Symposium was held in Palermo, Sicily. 8-13 July, 2007 and over 360 delegates attended. The sixth SEFS meeting was held in Romania 16 - 21 August, 2009. For more information, see the SEFS6 website. The seventh SEFS meeting will be in Spain in June 2011.
